LAS Live dives into a theatrical exploration of one of the most essential works of the last century: Ntozake Shange’s for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf. A Tony Award–nominated and Obie Award–winning landmark choreopoem of movement, music, memory, and testimony, for colored girls transformed the theatrical landscape by giving poetic form to the lives, wounds, resilience, intimacy, and joy of seven women spanning the colors of the rainbow. With special permission from the Ntozake Shange Trust, this theatrical exploration reimagines the work for five voices rather than the traditional seven. Across the limited engagement, the cast rotates, relationships shift, and each performance becomes its own encounter between the performers, the language, the music, and the room. The production lives somewhere between play, poetry, ritual, and concert. Performers may work with journals and text in hand as part of a theatrical language rooted in memory, testimony, play, and discovery. Helmed by studio founder Desean K. Terry, this intimate fifth-anniversary engagement brings audiences close to Shange’s language as it moves through different bodies, voices, and configurations from night to night.
